Since the 1960s Ross De Witt Netherton has worked alongside his wife, Ann Rohrke "Nan" Netherton, to preserve and record the history of Northern Virginia. Ross Netherton studied law at the University of Chicago and, in addition to engaging in historic preservation, has embarked on a long career teaching law and conducting legal research in academia, private industry, federal administrative offices, and Congressional study commissions. Until 1960, the federal government had responsibility for roads and bridges in Alaska: the Alaska Road Commission, under the War Dept., from 1905-1932, and the Interior Dept. from 1932 to 1956 when it was absorbed by the U.S. Bureau of Public Roads.
